TL;DR

Structural steel fabrication is the process of cutting, shaping, welding and finishing steel sections such as beams, columns and frames so they can carry load in a building, plant, or marine structure. In the UK you can expect fabricated and installed structural steel to cost roughly £1,200 to £2,800 per tonne depending on complexity, coatings and site access, with simple beam supply sitting at the lower end. For marine and heavy industrial work you also need coded welders, the right steel grade, and inspection such as MPI on critical welds. EAP Ltd fabricates and installs structural steelwork from our Kent base and at client sites nationwide, including Peterlee, Hull, Southampton, Rosyth, Glasgow, Plymouth and Falmouth. What is structural steel fabrication?

Structural steel fabrication turns raw steel sections and plate into finished, load-bearing components. The steps are straightforward to describe even if the engineering behind them is not: the design is drawn, the steel is cut and drilled, sections are welded or bolted together, then the finished assembly is cleaned, coated and installed.

The word "structural" is the important part. This is steel that holds something up or holds something together under real load, so accuracy, the right grade of steel, and sound welds matter far more than they would for decorative metalwork. A beam that is a few millimetres out or a weld that has not been checked can cause serious problems on site.

At EAP Ltd we fabricate structural steel for two broad worlds: land based industrial and building projects, and marine projects where the steel ends up on or around vessels, jetties and dockside plant. Both need the same disciplines, but the marine side adds tougher conditions and stricter approvals.

What can be made from fabricated structural steel?

Almost any load bearing metal part on a project starts life as a fabrication drawing. The most common items we are asked to make and install include:

  • Steel beams and columns such as universal beams (UB), universal columns (UC) and parallel flange channels (PFC) for buildings, mezzanines and plant support.
  • Structural frames and portal frames for warehouses, workshops and industrial units.
  • Steel staircases, walkways, platforms and handrails for access and safety.
  • Mezzanine decks and support structures that add floor space inside existing buildings.
  • Marine and dockside structures including gangways, jetty steelwork, deck sections and bespoke fittings.
  • Heavy plant components such as buckets, hoppers, conveyors and picking stations, plus temporary works fabrication.

If you can draw it and it needs to carry load, it can usually be fabricated. This is why steel fabrication sits at the centre of so many marine and industrial projects.

How much does structural steel fabrication cost in the UK?

Most structural steel in the UK is priced per tonne, which bundles the steel, the fabrication labour, and often the surface treatment and installation. The honest answer is that the price depends heavily on how complex the piece is and how easy it is to install, but the guide ranges below give a realistic starting point for 2026.

Type of workIndicative UK guide priceWhat drives the cost
Simple beam or column supplyAround £1,000 to £1,500 per tonneSteel grade, section size, minimal fabrication
Standard structural steelwork, supplied and installedAround £1,500 to £2,200 per tonneConnections, drilling, coating, site erection
Complex or bespoke steelworkAround £2,200 to £2,800+ per tonneTight tolerances, special coatings, awkward access
Marine grade or coded workPriced per projectClass approval, coded welding, inspection, offshore or dockside conditions

These figures are indicative and move with the steel market, so treat them as a way to sense check a quote rather than a fixed price list. Smaller jobs are often priced as a fixed lump sum instead of per tonne. For an accurate number, send us the drawings or a description and we will give you a firm quote. EAP Ltd works on a fixed price project basis, so you know the cost before work starts.

Why do steel fabrication quotes vary so much?

Three things move the price more than anything else. First, complexity: a plain beam is cheap to make, while a bespoke frame with many welded connections is not. Second, finish: hot dip galvanising or a marine paint system adds cost but greatly extends life. Third, access and location: fabricating in a workshop is efficient, while working at a live dockside or a busy plant adds time and planning. Getting the design right early, ideally with proper fabrication drawings, is the single best way to keep costs under control.

Steel beams explained: which section do you need?

People often ask for a "steel beam" when they actually need a specific section for a specific job. The main types you will meet are universal beams, universal columns and channels.

What is the difference between a universal beam and a universal column?

A universal beam (UB) is deeper than it is wide and is designed to span horizontally and carry loads across a distance, so it is the classic floor or roof beam. A universal column (UC) is roughly as wide as it is deep and is designed to stand vertically and carry loads straight down, so it makes an efficient post or column. Using the wrong one wastes steel or, worse, underperforms, which is why a structural engineer or designer should specify the section before anything is cut.

What about channels and plate?

Parallel flange channels (PFC) are useful for edges, trimmers and lighter framing. Steel plate is cut and folded for gussets, base plates, brackets and bespoke items. In marine and heavy plant work, plate fabrication is often where the real skill shows, because so much of it is bespoke.

Marine and industrial structural steel: what is different?

Structural steel for a warehouse and structural steel for a dockside are cousins, not twins. Marine and heavy industrial work adds three demands that ordinary building steel does not always face.

The first is the environment. Salt water, spray and constant damp attack steel far faster than a dry indoor setting, so grade selection and protective coatings are critical. The second is approval. Marine work often needs Class Approved operatives and coded welders whose welds meet a recognised standard, which is not the same as general fabrication. The third is inspection. Critical welds are frequently checked using non destructive testing, and magnetic particle inspection is one of the most common methods for surface and near surface cracks.

This is the crossover point where our steel fabrication and marine fabrication services meet. A jetty gangway, a deck section or a dockside support frame is structural steel, but it lives in a marine world and has to be built to suit.

How do you choose a structural steel fabricator in the UK?

Whether you are in Kent, on the North East coast or anywhere in between, the checklist is much the same. Look for a fabricator that can show you all of the following.

  • Coded and Class Approved welders for any load bearing or marine work, not just general welding.
  • Weld inspection and quality control, including non destructive testing where the job calls for it.
  • Design and drawing support so problems are solved on paper before steel is cut. Our design and CAD drafting services handle exactly this.
  • The ability to work at your site, not only in a workshop, which matters for large or fixed assemblies.
  • A clear fixed price and a realistic programme, so there are no surprises.

Location helps too. EAP Ltd is based in Kent at Gillingham near Chatham, and we operate from and around a network of UK sites including Peterlee, Hull, Southampton, Rosyth, Glasgow, Plymouth and Falmouth. That spread means we can fabricate in the workshop and install on your site without long travel adding to the bill.

Why weld quality and inspection matter for structural steel

A structural steel assembly is only as strong as its welds. A weld that looks fine on the surface can hide cracks or poor fusion underneath, and on a load bearing member that is a real risk. This is why coded welding and inspection are not optional extras on serious work. On marine and critical land based structures we use methods such as magnetic particle inspection to confirm welds are sound before anything goes into service. If you want to understand how that testing works and when it is used, see our guide to MPI weld testing (internal link, Blog 5, below).

Frequently asked questions

What is structural steel fabrication?

Structural steel fabrication is the process of cutting, drilling, welding and finishing steel sections such as beams, columns and frames into finished load bearing components for buildings, plant and marine structures.

How much does a steel beam cost in the UK?

As a guide, simple structural steel supply sits around £1,000 to £1,500 per tonne, with supplied and installed steelwork typically £1,500 to £2,200 per tonne and complex or bespoke work higher. Small single beams are often priced as a fixed lump sum, so it is best to get a quote against your drawings.

What is the difference between a universal beam and a universal column?

A universal beam (UB) is deeper than it is wide and spans horizontally to carry loads across a distance. A universal column (UC) is roughly square in profile and stands vertically to carry loads straight down. Your designer should specify which section suits the job.

Do marine structures use the same steel as buildings?

Not always. Marine structural steel faces salt, spray and damp, so grade selection and protective coatings are more demanding, and the work often needs Class Approved and coded welders plus weld inspection.

Can EAP Ltd install steel on our site, or only in a workshop?

Both. EAP Ltd fabricates in its own UK facilities and installs at client sites nationwide, which suits large assemblies, fixed plant and marine structures that cannot easily be moved.

Where does EAP Ltd carry out steel fabrication?

We are based in Kent at Gillingham near Chatham and work from and around UK locations including Peterlee, Hull, Southampton, Rosyth, Glasgow, Plymouth and Falmouth, as well as at client sites across the UK and EU.
